On Tuesday, June 23rd, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled on two ballot questions. State Question 809, the Reinstate Permitting Requirements for Firearms Initiative, was hoping to reinstate firearm permitting and transport requirements that were effective before the passage of House Bill 2597 in 2019. The court determined that the question was misleading and didn’t correctly describe the proposal. The campaign won’t be able to start collecting signatures without rewriting and submitting the petition.
The court did greenlight State Question 807 for signature collection. The initiative would legalize and regulate marijuana for those over 21 years of age and impose a 15% excise on marijuana sales. The group has 90 days to collect 177,958 signatures, which is an intimidating task due to coronavirus restrictions. However, the measure is supported by New Approach PAC. The organization supports progressive initiatives and has contributed at least $6,937.500 to marijuana initiatives since 2014.
